After obtaining her doctorate from the University of Adelaide, she held posts in Roman archaeology at the University of Reading and, most recently, the University of Oxford. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America, and has lectured widely in Europe, North America and Japan.
