Smile: A Graphic Novel

Smile: A Graphic Novel by Raina Telgemeier is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply relatable coming-of-age memoir that has become a #1 New York Times bestseller and Eisner Award winner. Based on the author’s real childhood, the story follows Raina, a sixth grader who only wants to fit in and live a normal school life. However, everything changes when she trips after a Girl Scouts meeting and badly injures her two front teeth.

What follows is years of dental treatments, including braces, surgeries, headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth—leading to many awkward, embarrassing, and frustrating moments. Alongside her medical journey, Raina also experiences everyday struggles like shifting friendships, boy confusion, and growing up, all set against unexpected events like a major earthquake.

With expressive illustrations and emotional honesty, Smile captures the challenges of adolescence, self-esteem, and resilience, showing how confidence can grow even through difficult and uncomfortable experiences.
